The following work is presented chronologically in order to better evidence the progression of my practice-as-research activities and development of homosocial film practice. Context and reflection regarding this work can be found in the written component of my doctoral thesis.
A short scene where two friends discuss their thoughts on a video game. Each version of the scene takes place with a different element of physical contact between the two friends. This film also includes conversations with the participants.
A one-shot film where I go through my post-shower morning routine while my voiceover reflects on how I relate to an image or presentation of masculinity which I do not necessarily agree with.
A short film in which my female partner applies her makeup routine to my face while my voiceover reflects on the experience.
A short film of my female partner’s thoughts on gender after she purposely dresses in masculine-coded attire, primarily structured as an interview.
A short film set during lockdown where I call an off-screen friend to check in and invite them to play an online game with me. The subtitles displayed during this film “translate” my words into intentions.
Footage featuring myself directing two actors as we rehearse a scene where two friends video call each other during lockdown. This includes our conversations around our real-life thoughts of masculinity and how we relate to the scripted content.
A short one-shot film where two friends call each other during lockdown. Due to lockdown restrictions, this was recorded on each participant’s mobile phone and then edited together.
A short film where I outline a series of activities or moments that make me “feel like a man”.
A short film where I and my real-life friend Krisz hang out while playing a video game. Also features conversations between us where we reflect on the nature of our friendship and physical intimacy.
The first day of footage featuring myself directing two actors as we rehearse scenes for the short film Bar Bonding.
The second day of footage featuring myself directing two actors as we rehearse scenes for the short film Bar Bonding.
A short film where friends John and Harry reconnect over a pint. Harry puts on a brave face, but John can tell something is troubling him. This film serves as the culmination of my development of homosocial film practice in this research project.
